During July 2016, Eurofins announced the acquisition of another laboratory in New Zealand. Agfirst Bay of Plenty, a leading fruit maturity testing laboratory in New Zealand, increases Eurofins network of laboratories to six, located around the country.

Shown in the map as location 1, Agfirst Bay of Plenty was founded over 20 years ago, and provides independent kiwifruit maturation sampling and testing services from laboratories in Katikati and Te Puke. They are also the leading provider of independent avocado maturation sampling and testing services. The Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand represents approximately 80% of New Zealand’s kiwifruit crop which is New Zealand’s leading horticultural export product.

The new company will be named Eurofins Bay of Plenty and at its busiest times will employ in excess of 250 staff.

Location of Eurofins Sites around New Zealand

This new laboratory joins a number of existing laboratories around the country, each providing a different type of testing. These laboratories are shown on the map and their services are described below.

2 – Eurofins Food and Environment: Auckland

The laboratory in Auckland has 140 staff serving the food, dairy, and environmental industries of New Zealand. Samples can be processed in this large microbiology and pathogen lab or in the general and organic chemistry laboratories. The chemistry lab can offer Nutritional Analysis for Food and Dairy Label Claims. A Good Management Practice (GMP) certified department offers raw product Pharma tests accredited to this standard as well as stability chamber trials for Pharma products. The laboratory also offers a soil, silage, feed and fertiliser testing service. Also available from the Auckland site is a full auditing service for the food and dairy industries that covers the whole country. Finally, the laboratory also offers a comprehensive environmental sampling and testing service including Trade Waste for the Auckland region. This new environmental service is proving popular with Auckland companies requiring an alternative Trade Waste sampling and testing service.

3 – Eurofins Environment: Wellington

The Wellington based laboratory has over 60 staff serving the food and environmental sectors for customers all around New Zealand. A large sampling team collects samples from all around the lower North Island.

Services include metals testing, inorganic and organic chemistry testing, as well as drinking water, environmental and food microbiology testing.

4 – Eurofins Food and Environment: Rolleston (near Christchurch)

Like Auckland this lab can perform food and environmental testing as well as auditing of food and dairy factories. Built in 2015 this purpose built facility contains state of art laboratory design

5 – Eurofins Agroscience: Hamilton

The Eurofins Agroscience laboratory based in Hamilton is part of the global Eurofins Agroscience network. This laboratory operates under Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) accreditation for the analysis of agrochemicals and veterinary medicines and their residues in animal tissues, crops, soil, and foodstuffs. The lab also performs product testing and storage stability studies under GLP accreditation.

6 – Eurofins Agroscience: Havelock North

Eurofins Agroscience Services NZ is a contract research organisation that offers a range of scientific research and development, as well as consulting and testing services in agriculture, horticulture and animal health. The main facility is located at Havelock North, with a second facility recently established at the Bay of Plenty. They have the ability to conduct field research throughout the whole of New Zealand. Core activities include efficacy, safety and residue studies in plants and animals, crop and variety evaluation, "off-season" testing and regulatory science consulting. Eurofins Agroscience Services NZ is the only contract research organisation (CRO) in New Zealand that is able to conduct GLP compliant research for both the field (Havelock North) and analytical (Hamilton) phases of crop and animal residue studies.
