Taste and Odour Compounds in Drinking Water Sources

Sidebar Image

As we are moving into our warmer summer season, the rivers and lakes around New Zealand start to develop increased levels of bacteria and algae. If these source waters are used in water treatment plants they can cause taste and odour problems.

Geosmin (a chemical with an earthy odour) and MIB (a chemical with a musty odour) are common odorous chemicals in New Zealand water sources. If these compounds get from the source water into the reticulation, the odours can be detected by some people at concentrations as low as 5 to 10 parts per trillion.
